Introducing the new Libec Swift Jib50

Libec, the camera support specialist, is pleased to announce the launch of Jib50, a new jib featuring a strong telescopic arm. This model joins a range of supports that includes the Jib30, a product that won the prestigious Digital Video Black Diamond Award 2011 at California's DV Expo in September 2011.

Available in kit form with carrying cases, it is a truly portable system, at home in the studio and in the field. The Jib50 has been designed to be versatile and adaptable to users' needs: a remote control box, monitors and a remote head can all be fitted to the jib with minimal effort. Like the Jib30, the Jib50 is quick, compact and dynamic. It can be set up in minutes, hence its name - Swift Jib.

A stand-out feature of this model is its telescopic arm. Rather than fixing on extension units, a time consuming and often fiddly process, Jib50's arm simply extends by turning the lock levers. Despite this additional mechanism, the Libec jib is still able to support considerable loads. Even fully extended at 190cm, it can still hold a 10Kg load, as much as many other systems can manage at a metre length. At its shortest setting - 100cm - it has the build quality to hold an impressive 20Kg of equipment. This strength and adaptability makes the product a highly versatile piece of equipment.

Nick Allen-Miles of Ianiro International comments: "Producers have become used to working around the limitations of their grip, as changing jib arm length has been something of a chore, especially on location where camera operators prefer to travel light. With Jib50 this is no longer an issue. We think its extendible arm, combined with its sheer strength make it an excellent choice."

Jib50 - Swift Jib - will be on the Ianiro stand at Earls Court's BVE 2012. Camera crews are welcome to try out this new model.

Ianiro UK Introduces a New Go-anywhere Light Source

New to the Ianiro UK range of lighting equipment is the Foton, a small, lightweight and versatile variable-beam unit. It is powerful, inexpensive and waterproof.

Manufactured by PRG, the Foton is a highly colour-accurate digital light source designed specifically for motion picture, broadcast and professional photography. Producing a 95+ colour rendering index (CRI), the Foton virtually eliminates the challenges of lighting with the discontinuous spectrum inherent in most LED lighting sources. Instead, completely natural-looking light is generated using remote phosphor technology, requiring no colour correction, while correlating perfectly with professional light and colour meters. Impressively, it is dimmable from 0% To 100% with no colour shift.

The Foton is a 1.3Kg go-anywhere light. It is able to operate at temperatures from -20 to +50 degrees while its sealing means it is suitable for use unprotected in wet locations, being able to withstand water saturation.

Nick Allen-Miles of distributor Ianiro UK commented: “The Foton will be welcomed by everyone from ENG camera men shooting outdoors in European drizzle to film makers facing wintry mountain conditions. Its small size, high output and low power consumption means it will also be a welcome addition for specialist crews working underground, in disaster zones or desert environments.”

Cost-saving features include an estimated 50,000 hour life, and, in spite of its 1,000 lumen output, the Foton draws less than 30 watts and requires no cooling fans. This is achieved despite employing a direct-drive array that eliminates flicker at any frame rate. Flexible options include both Ac and Dc-powered versions and a variable beam angle of 10˚ to 120˚using quick-connect reflectors.

The television industry is big business in the UK and a very considerable employer to boot. Feeding the media with the next generation of producers and technicians can be a costly in terms of training and education. It's a financial challenge that's beyond most of today's hard-pushed schools.

So, although media studies is increasingly popular, many institutions can deliver the theory with great aplomb but fall short on the practical side of teaching programme making.

Following a significant refurbishment project, students in the West Midlands are now at an advantage. The local authority has had the foresight to develop a centralised media resource for students from all across the area. Known enigmatically as Flat Sandwich Studios, the centre is replete with broadcast equipment, expert technical support and specialist media trainers.

James Jordan, Operations Manager of the studios said: “Employers need new recruits that have the theoretical understanding of production as well as practical experience with professional kit. To make sure we were on the right track, we set out with an agenda to establish a centre that could prove its relevance by selling itself to schools and also holding its own as a commercial enterprise.”

Now complete, Flat Sandwich is home to an array of first-rate facilities including an HD green screen studio with full lighting rig, a multi-system Final Cut Pro editing room, satellite OB vans and a ProTools recording studio. The installation was managed by a team from the midland video specialist, Digital Garage, who oversaw the full refurbishment of the centre.

Today the studios fulfil dual education and commercial functions. Schools and colleges from the region attend for practical programme-making experience while businesses of all kinds have used the facilities to create high quality training films and publicity videos.

“The HD studio cameras we specified do a great job while the Panasonic HPX171 P2 camcorders are true broadcast systems, giving users image control and fabulous pictures.” comments James. “The chromakey results we have achieved are excellent, thanks to the performance of the Newtek Tricaster, the control from the Libec jib and the lighting rig from Ianiro.

The lighting units are a mix of fluorescent and tungsten units. James notes: “Initially we were just happy that they came within budget but it's safe to say that we have been exceptionally pleased with the Ianiro equipment - it's been at the heart of both film and photography projects. The control it allows has enabled users to really learn the 'dark art' of lighting. We've even been confident enough to re-create a moonscape and have now started investigating offering dedicated lighting training courses. We do own some on-camera lights, but the rig has been so good that we very rarely use them.”

Digital Garage recommended equipment based on its quality and interoperability. As such, the project was delivered on time – and therefore to budget.

Now through its probationary period, James reflects on the re-fit: “With video equipment, there's always a compromise between price and performance but it really has exceeded our expectations. It's a set up I would recommend to anyone. As for Digital Garage and the installation team, they've got a great skillset of technical nous and commercial sense. In both respects, they've been an ideal partner.”

Now looking to the future, James is keen to invest in more Panasonic ENG cameras and grip, and is already busy researching large sensor camera options. Meanwhile the centre's students are already reporting that their practical experience at Flat Sandwich Studios has given them a real advantage in the job market.

Ianiro SOLARIS LED - A glance to the future.

IANIRO’s research and development into LED applications in television goes on, as was announced from the earliest introduction of our portable equipment to LED technology in 2007.

With fast-paced evolution in LEDs in the interim, and a greater experience being acquired in low-consumption ENG and EFP devices in the field, we are beginning to see the application potential also for TV studios.

Our approach remains cautious and detached from certain inflated expectations often based on a degree of misinformation.

The native character of LEDs as unidirectional, key light sources is a strength - provided it is used precisely in assemblies for hard lighting solutions rather than soft ones.
However, the criticality of LEDs to increases in drive current remains a weak point. LEDs are very sensitive to thermal management and overheating beyond the manufacturers’ recommended limits still causes their characteristics to deteriorate significantly, with associated reduction in light output, change in color temperature, and a reduced durability.

Compared to these and other stumbling blocks, we are instead witnessing promising developments in terms of assembly potential. Both LED manufacturers and
lighting equipment manufacturers can now create more types of mono-chip arrays (improperly but effectively named) with latest production techniques that allow LEDs to be mounted closer together. The visual result is a single concentrated light source that reduces shadow fragmentation and improves light-beam uniformity and control with front lens and barndoors.

This allows for switching from Par-type LED lights or simple Panel ones, to true singlefront-lens projectors that allow for changing the angle from spot to flood: in other words, television projectors in their own right.

Manufacturers are also starting to make these individual LED assemblies available with improved CRI / CQS Unfortunately, at high color rendering, less light is produced so the equipment needs to provide a compromise of acceptable quality without necessarily seeking a maximum light output.

Last but not least, many LEDs are now powered up to 3A, remembering that things had started from 350mAh and 700mAh. Even today most devices are usually powered at 1A/1.5A, which are still ideal drive currents for allowing greater LED performance stability.

	SOLARIS LED

So in light of this evolution, for the IBC2011 trade show in September we have prepared a line of prototype Fresnel-lens projectors aimed at a balance between performance and consistency.
By the way our arrays performed very well and in dark room won on Solaris tungsten 1kw with a consumption of only 180W, and very limited extra size thanks to its compact built-in dissipating device.

The projectors use 3 IANIRO custom assemblies with the very latest generation LEDs:

Solaris LED C Cool (cool white)

Solaris LED W Warm (warm white)

Solaris LED WT White Tuning (tunable white)

The main advantage of key LED lights and backlight work is that of being able to integrate the cold fluorescent lights into small to medium television studios without using any external dimmers (currently needed with halogen projectors), and of being able to modulate the color temperature to the fluorescent lights in use (hot 3200°k or cold 5600°k).

	The results are:

 Significant energy savings

Reduced maintenance, air conditioning and operating costs

 Simpler cabling

Ianiro to demonstrate a new line of prototype Fresnel-lens LED projectors at IBC 2011

Ianiro is pleased to announce a new light based on newly developed LED arrays. The new device has compared extremely well in dark room test conditions against a Solaris tungsten 1kw. Ianiro's new unit boasts a consumption of only 180W in a comparable size casing, thanks to a built-in dissipating system. The new projector uses 3 Ianiro custom assemblies with the very latest generation LEDs: Solaris LED C (cool white), Solaris LED W (warm white) and Solaris LED WT (tunable white).

LED technology is a burgeoning business. Manufacturers are claiming that its key features - energy saving, simpler cabling, longer life and switchable colour temperatures - amount to a lighting revolution. However, LED technology has been the victim of inflated expectations, often based on a degree of misinformation. Despite introducing its first portable LED models in 2007, Ianiro's research and development team has remained cautious about adopting the technology at too early a stage in its evolution. Despite the fast-pace of development in LEDs, its potential is only just starting to be realised. With low-consumption LED devices being increasingly used for ENG and EFP, studios are now also looking at the potential for LED.

	A Tale of Caution

The native character of LED as a unidirectional, key light source is highly appealing. However, the sensitivity of LEDs to increases in drive current remains a weak point. LEDs are very susceptible to overheating beyond the manufacturers’ recommended limits, at which point their characteristics to deteriorate significantly, with a reduction in light output, change in color temperature, and a reduced durability.

Many LEDs can now be powered up to 3A, (compared with earlier 350mAh and 700mAh units). Even today most devices are usually powered at 1A/1.5A, which is ideal for allowing greater LED performance stability. Ianiro's prototype Fresnel-lens projector does not push drive current to the maximum but instead ensures a balance between performance and optimal efficiency.

As multi-diode assemblies, LEDs can suffer from shadowing, depending on the distance from the subject and the placement of individual LEDs. Manufacturers have developed mono-chip arrays with LEDs mounted closer together. The resulting single concentrated light source reduces shadow fragmentation and improves light-beam uniformity and control. It has also taken improvements in lenses and hoods to limit shadows, allowing for switching from Par-type lights (multi-LEDs with small lenses of different angles) or simple Panel units, to true single-front-lens projectors that allow for changing the angle from spot to flood.

Manufacturers are also starting to make these individual LED assemblies available with CRI / CQS characteristics, ideally suited to television and film photography. Unfortunately, at high color rendering, less light is produced so there is still a compromise between quality and output.

Early models will be market tested before final technical data is announced and ergonomic designs are released.

New Light-Weight Multi-Axis Remote Head Delivers Maximum Flexibility

1 September 2011, Redditch, UK: ABC Products has announced the launch of its new P15 remote 2- or 3-axis remote head. Distributed by Ianiro UK, the head is ideal for TV and film productions and offers users the ultimate flexibility.

Following ABC Product's philosophy of modular design, users that opt for the lighter 2-axis version (12kg) can add the third at a later date, taking the weight of the unit up to a still very portable 19.5kg.

Commenting on the launch of the new system, distributor Ianiro's Nick Allen-Miles stated: “The P15's relative light weight means that it is equally at home rigged in the studio or quickly attached to a mobile crane or jib. This level of flexibility is what modern production operations need in order to get the most out of their equipment. As such this is a great tool for the modern broadcast and film environment.”

With its silent operation, precise, intuitive control system and robust build quality, the P15 is suited to the most demanding productions. The remote head allows the user continually to change the speed, movement, tilt, pan and roll of the camera using a joystick, electronic controller with built-in 4,3” touchscreen or a pan bar. Delivering the option of focus and zoom control via its integrated motors, the P15 offers producers complete control of modern broadcast cameras.

The remote head can support digital camera systems weighing up-to 25kg in the 2-axis version and 15kg in its 3-axis configuration. It is manufactured to the highest standard for maximum rigidity and its euro mount system or optional Mitchell adapter means that cameras can be rigged quickly and simply. These mounting options mean that the head can be attached to a large range of sturdy cranes or jib arms, as required.

New High Strength Jib from ABC Products

Redditch 17 June | Hot on the heals of its well-received light DSLR jib, ABC Products has announced the launch of Jib 100. While the light jib has a maximum payload of 4.5kg, this new high strength product can support camera configurations of up-to 20kg. It is distributed by Ianiro UK.

The Jib 100 is extremely sturdy, manufactured to a high specification with a robust, rigid structure. This focus on build quality means that it has the reassuring strength and stability to support fully-rigged broadcast and film cameras, from the Panasonic HPX3700 or Sony PMW-500 to the the ARRI Alexa or Sony F900R. The jib is built to last and will give directors of photography precision results time after time.

The new device will give users smooth and controlled camera movement to create a fluid effect to a shot. It comes with integrated horizontal and vertical brakes as well as a fine trimmer to level the jib for maximum control. With a boom-length of 1.62m, the Jib 100 will help the camera operators achieve the shot they want: attached to a tripod the arm will allow for over-head or ground level shots. Connected to any heavy duty tripod with a 75mm or 100mm head, the Jib 100 is ideal for programme makers that want to be picture perfect every time.

"This is a great example of German engineering," said Nick Allen-Miles, MD of Ianiro UK, the distributor for ABC Products. "Its industrial-strength is class-leading and, as with all ABC Products, it's designed to be quick to assemble so there's no time lost in production waiting for the jib operator."

Despite its focus on rigid construction, the Jib 100 is still highly portable packing down into a 1.5m long carry case and weighing 19kg.

User Story: Production Solutions for the 21st Century

Film crews, edit suites, OB trucks, system integrators... wherever you find professional production, you will find professionals trained and developed by broadcast television. The thousands that were shaped and educated by TV stations across the country then 'released' into self-employment as the business models changed are the backbone of today's production industry. Their experience and knowledge drives standards and excellence throughout the sector.

Visit the online forums and you will come across the queen bees of the community - respected authorities whose voices enlighten other members and occasionally temper their excitement. Names like Alan Roberts and Philip Bloom are now familiar to thousands of forum devotees. Their opinions were shaped by years in broadcasting.

In today's world where HD production is only a trip to Currys away, the Internet is full of high resolution content while Yellow Pages are packed with companies offering 'broadcast quality production.' Tune into YouTube to see that 720p is not a guarantee of watchable video.

Panasonic user Gary Nattrass has been a broadcast cameraman and sound engineer for more than 3 decades. He has travelled a familiar path, making the transition from broadcast employee to freelance contractor. He is now active in the North East of England and his company HD Production Solutions produces broadcast and corporate work. He sums up his advice succinctly:

"Years of experience has taught me two things: one, always produce to broadcast quality, technically and creatively; two: never push your kit beyond its capabilities.

"My long apprenticeship at ITV Tyne Tees gave me an appreciation of sound recording, lighting, producing and shooting. I was able to work on the job, from covering the local news to filming Queen's Live Magic tour at Wembley. My mentors were professionals that had started out in the 1950s - my generation was taught by the guys that actually developed modern television."

Nattrass relates that in the 1980s and 90s, broadcasters used only top end kit. Current budgets and lower rates mean that today's production teams have to strike a balance between equipment performance and cost.

"My current Panasonic HPX371s and Libec tripods are mid-market tools. But they both give me broadcast-quality results. The 371 may be a 1/3 inch chip system, but it's BBC-approved for HD use and for me that's a mark of quality. The only thing I find I lose with 1/3" chips is depth of field. All other operations are the same albeit subject to the usual CMOS skew problems but it is not a problem as I know the panning limitations. Lens choice can be an issue too but if I need more DOF or different lenses I hire the HPX3700 with the lenses I need. To put it in perspective though, I have done everything from news to full drama production on my current set-up."

"With the tripods, it's the same story", he continues. "They may not have bells and whistles of the most expensive models, but my Libec supports are dependable. If I need a bigger head or even more precise counterbalance settings then I hire it in."

For Nattrass, reliability, ease of use and portability are key factors with the kit he purchases. He reminisces about standing, freezing outside an election count in Sunderland for hours on end means. This is where appropriate kit really shows its worth. Tripods that can be set up and packed away fast, camera switches that are easy to reach and operate - these are more important to the cameraman than unlimited levels of customisation and innovative functions that may well be a joy in ideal conditions but over-complicate a shoot when time is short and weather poor.

So Nattrass recommends buying kit that is above all strong on core functionality. "And I keep servicing it. And I only work with suppliers that support the customer. And with mechanical items that get very high usage - like tripods - I go for two solid spec supports above a single top of the range model."

Assessing his tripod selection, Nattrass emphasises the care taken to get the right model and stay within the stated load capacities. Not only is his concern the balancing of the tripod but avoiding wear and tear on the device. As budgets get tighter, there is a temptation to push the kit harder by overloading the support. Tripods are mission-critical and nowadays the Libec failure rate is astonishingly low but as Nick Allen-Miles of Libec Europe cautions:

"It would take a lot to make one of these tripods fail, but everything has its limit. You can make anything break but their design and materials mean that they can withstand a fair beating."

Nattrass' kit list follows a familiar pattern. It has to be simple and ergonomic to use. It has to be finished to a high standard, tough and durable. "It should be good enough for broadcasting when I buy it and in the same working order two years later. Nice extra features that aren't proven, that might be dust traps, that can only be operated by pushing a small plasticky button... these are things I actively avoid.

Movietech's Dolly Breaks Free from the Chains

Movietech has announced a new version of its popular Arco camera dolly. The dolly has been re-engineered, giving it class-leading reliability, simplifying its maintenance and reducing the cost of ownership.

The Arco Dolly has become a familiar piece of equipment on film and TV sets. It has gained a reputation among production crews for being simple to operate, lightweight, sturdy and versatile in any environment. Now a raft of technical enhancements has made the dolly even easier to own.

The heart of the Arco - the hydraulic system - has been mounted onto an easily extractable drawer system. This allows users instant access to the mechanism for maintenance work without having to first dismantle the gearbox. The hydraulics themselves have been simplified with just one flexible tube from the circuit to the pressure chamber, dramatically reducing the chance of oil leaks.

The dolly's transmission chains have been replaced by belts, a move that means less overall weight, no need to grease and clean regularly, no wear of mechanical components and no need to regulate the tension. Finally, thanks to a new valve mounted directly on the piston, it is now possible to regulate the speed of the arm effortlessly.

Ianiro's Alladin Grants Three Wishes: Power, Performance and Price

Redditch March 18th 2011: Ianiro is delighted to announce the launch of the new LED version of its popular 12V light. The Aladdin DVCam Light has been upgraded with state-of-the-art LED technology. With its dual power on-board options (18.7W and 9.3W), the new generation of Aladdin LED 12V is approximately as bright as a 50W conventional tungsten unit with less than half the power consumption.

Ianiro's lighting specialists have found that only high quality LEDs in particular arrays can deliver real efficiency and the right balance between consumption, performance and longevity. Many earlier generation LED systems have lacked the efficiency or performance required by television producers.

Ianiro's latest lights use 'Ianileds' which benefit from precise LED colour groups combined with new custom-designed PCBs. Employing “Osram Oslon SSL” LEDs, an exceptionally small light source designed to maximize application efficiency, the designers at Ianiro have been able to engineer a slim and compact lighting unit that delivers directed light with outstanding efficiency. The light employs a mixed configuration with white LEDs balanced by amber LEDs to produce a colour temperature that is ideal for digital acquisition.

The result is a product that represents excellent value for money while delivering on the needs of the most demanding productions. Featuring a wide angle beam (80°) that is suitable for 16:9 production, the light delivers a natural skin tone and has a lifetime of around 50,000 hours.

Control of the unit is simple and instant. It offers a dimmer control, with colour temperature constant across the range, a tungsten orange filter (3200K) and barn doors prefitted to the unit. It comes complete with a DMount hinged arm and a power tap connector.

The Alladin on-board light is available from resellers.

Visio's new Paso LED Light Lifts the Winter Gloom

BVE 2011 15th-17th February: Lighting specialist Ianiro UK is delighted to announce a new professional, portable 100W LED light which boasts output equivalent to 1000w tungsten unit. Like its sister product, the Minima, the Paso is notable for its user-defined colour temperature control.

The arrival of high-power LEDs is causing a revolution in professional lighting. While earlier LED systems were plagued by an inferior light throw and problems of over-heating, the new generation is setting new standards in efficiency, longevity and flexibility.

The newest model on the market, the Paso shares the characteristics of all advanced LED lights, such as full dimming control, instant-on, and the benefit of hot restrike. Cool, powerful and with a low power requirement, the Paso is a great example of the huge strides LED lights have made. Manufactured by Visio, the Paso's output is exceptional and its colour fidelity is very high, with a CRI in excess of 90%. The Paso is an ideal replacement for a red head.

However, its stand-out feature is the Paso's colour control. With 6 temperatures instantly selectable, and each preset fully RGB adjustable, the Paso will save crews the need to buy, carry and fit filters. It will also save editors considerable time in post by reducing the need for colour correction.

Nick Allen-Miles, MD of Ianiro UK noted: "The Paso is the latest in a really exciting series of LED lights. The unit is very flexible - it will be at home both in the studio and on-location. For any professional needing bright, cool, reliable lighting, the Paso is a god-send. We think it's going to be very popular for lighting interviews or any production that needs fast but highly controlled illumination."

At £999 + vat, the unit offers excellent value for money, particularly given its built-in DMX control, colour temperature control and expected lifetime of around 22,000 hours. What's more, its cost of ownership is low. The unit's power consumption is a very modest 0.6 amps - the Paso will run off a typical professional battery pack for days - a huge benefit for any team working remotely.

The Paso is being shown for the first time at BVE 2011 at Earls Court.

Ianiro UK uses BVE 2011 to introduce new camera mounted LED light with variable colour temperature control

New Minima LED light offers the ultimate on-camera solution with switchable colour temperatures, full dimming control and outstanding brightness

Ianiro UK is introducing the new Minima pro LED light, manufactured by Visio Inc. The Minima is a very small unit that weighs a mere 190 grams. Despite its diminutive proportions, the Minima provides an excellent level of output at 100 lm / Watt, equivalent to a 50W tungsten. Uniquely, in a unit of this size, the light offers full colour temperature switching, with 6 settings from 2800°K to 6500°K.

Nick Allen-Miles of Ianiro UK commented:

"The Minima is a major step forward for every production on the run. It does away with the need for colour gels to control image temperature, buying the camera team valuable time while reducing the size of their kit bag. But most importantly, the quality of the output is excellent, marrying outstanding brightness with amazing colour accuracy."

The Minima achieves this accuracy by combining red, white and yellow LED lights to form a continuous spectrum with full-range frequency. Low-cost and inaccurate analog circuitry has been replaced by a digital signal microprocessor and a 25k frequency PWM controller. This allows for the colour ratio of different LEDs to be adjusted precisely according to different colour temperatures. Minima's CRI (Colour Rendering Index) can reach above 90% at any colour temperature from 2800°K to 6500°K. Minimum colour shift is guaranteed to be within the range of 3-step dimming.

With the unit featuring 144 individual LED light bulbs, the Minima delivers a pleasant, uniformly soft light that delivers natural skin toneswith an excellent 3D effect. Despite the sophistication of its electronics and its powerful lighting output, Minima features a low power consumption design and with a run time of 1.5 hours.

	Allen-Miles adds:

"In today's media frenzy, time is of the essence. The camera operator is always looking to start shooting fast, with the least possible set up time. And production departments are increasingly calling for footage that can go to air without time consuming colour correction or relighting in post. The Minima can help camera teams capture broadcast-ready, beautiful pictures fast. They can now shoot interview after interview without reaching for spare batteries, gels or reflectors."

The Minima is available from December 2010 from dealers across Europe at an SRP £169.00 / 199 Euros. Visit www.ianirouk.com for more details. The Minima will be on show at BVE 2011, Earls Court 2.
